How to Pack it right
Packing Basics
Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a first timer, packing and moving is something everyone does (multiple times) in their life! For many of us, it can become an overwhelming task and can leave us feeling frustrated and defeated. Here are a few helpful packing basics to help you avoid that headache later!
Tip #1
First and foremost, be sure to plan out your time!
Once you know what items you’ll be packing up, try to decide how much time it will take you. Whether it’s a couple of days or a couple of hours, it normally takes more time then we initially thought, so do yourself a favor and allow for some wiggle room! We’ve all been there, when you run out of packing tape halfway through or when the original 8 boxes turns into 15, at least you won’t be under pressure!
Also, when deciding how much time you will need to pack everything up, don’t forget to add time for cleaning and drying your items. This is an important and easily overlooked step. You want your belongings to remain in good condition while they’re in storage. Having dirty or damp items can cause mold and attract bugs.
Tip #2
Sort, sort, sort!
Take a couple days before you begin packing to sort out what you’re going to pack. Put heavier items together and lighter items together for a smooth process. You will also want to put similar items together, for example putting kitchen items together or bathroom items together. This will make it easier to label and easier to find exactly what you’re looking for down the road.
Tip #3
Be specific when you label
Be sure to be specific when you label your boxes. The more detailed the better! Either label directly on the boxes and add their contents, or you can number your boxes and get creative with a chart to help you. Down the line when you’re looking for your favorite blanket or blender, you’ll know exactly which box to look in!
Tip #4
Stock up on packing material
Packing material is really important when you are packing up your personal belongings. Be sure you have enough! Whether it’s cardboard boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, moving blankets etc. These items will definitely come in handy!
You can also use old blankets and towels to cover furniture and wrap delicate items.
Tip #5
Fill up your boxes
Filling up your box will help you prevent it from collapsing and potentially damaging your items. However, don’t overfill it either! Overfilling can also lead to potential damage of your belongings. Use packing paper or bubble wrap to fill your box all the way for optimal security.
Tip #6
Place similar weighted items together
It can be tempting to place all your items together in one big box. However, by using smaller sized boxes for heavier items, they will be easier to move around and access in the future. Bigger boxes are perfect for your lighter items.
